How do I choose a therapist?

Seeking therapy is a crucial step in taking care of your mental health. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues, finding the right therapist can make a significant difference in your healing journey. With so many options available, choosing the right therapist can feel overwhelming. Here’s a guide to help you navigate this important decision.

Think about what your main concern is

Before starting your search, it’s important to identify your specific needs and goals for therapy. Understanding your needs will help you find a therapist who specialises in the appropriate area. Think about the main difficulty you want help with and what you want to get out of therapy as a starting point.

Seek good advice

Start your search by seeking recommendations from trusted sources like your GP, friends, or family members who have had positive experiences with therapy.

Check credentials

It’s crucial to verify a therapist’s credentials and ensure they are licensed to practice.  Check their qualifications, such as a degree in psychology or a diploma in counselling and the correct professional registrations. Counsellors should be registered with the BACP or the NCPS, Psychologists should be registered with the HCPC and CBT therapists should be registered with the BABCP. Furthermore, consider their experience in dealing with issues similar to yours. For example, a therapist with a background in treating anxiety disorders may be more effective if you're struggling with anxiety.

Consider what approach would suit you best

Therapists employ various therapeutic approaches, and it’s essential to find one that aligns with your needs and preferences. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), for instance, is goal-oriented and focuses on changing negative thought patterns, making it suitable for anxiety and depression. On the other hand, psychodynamic therapy delves into past experiences and relationships to uncover underlying issues. Understanding these approaches will help you choose a therapist whose methods resonate with you. You can also look online to see what the NICE guidelines recommend as evidence-based approaches for the issues you are grappling with.

Be practical

Practical factors such as location, availability, cost, and whether you have health insurance are important to consider. A therapist who is conveniently located and has availability that matches your schedule will make it easier to attend regular sessions. For health insurance, check the therapist you are considering is registered with your insurer by checking their register.
